Garbage Truck Fire - Route 22
On, January 14, 2014 at approximately
0800 hours patrol was advised by a passerby of a Waste Management
garbage truck, which appeared to be on fire while traveling on
Route 22. It was believed that the operator of the truck was not
aware of the fire. The truck was located at Route 22 and
Greengate Road where the driver stopped the vehicle and exited
without injury.
The body of the truck was engulfed in
flames and both lanes of Route 22 west were temporarily closed.
The Whitehouse, East Whitehouse, Readington, and Lebanon fire
departments arrived on scene. Compacted garbage in the body of
the truck was released onto the roadway to properly extinguish
the fire. Due to the release of garbage on the highway, cleanup
was conducted by the State Department of Transportation and Waste
Management in accordance with regulations set forth by the
Department of Environmental Protection. The cause of the fire in
the body of the truck was not known.
