Route 22 Accident
On Thursday, January 21, 2016, at approximately 3:30 pm there was a 2 vehicle accident on Route 22 East / Ridge Road. Frederic Mccaughey of Clinton, NJ was operating a 2002 GMC SUV that was emerging from Ridge Road to drive across Route 22 and travel west on the highway. Sfc. Christopher Dewire of the Readington Township Police Department was operating his 2015 Ford police vehicle in the left lane of Route 22 East.
Preliminary investigation indicates that McCaughey's view may have been obstructed by a truck that was waiting to make a right hand turn onto Ridge Road. McCaughey attempted to cross the highway, pulling in front of Dewire's police vehicle.
McCaughey was flown by North Star to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital as a precaution after receiving a laceration to his head and feeling disorientated. Dewire was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center for evaluation after also receiving a laceration to his head and a wrist injury.
Both vehicles were severely damaged as the GMC SUV came to rest on its side and the police vehicle had damage to the front of the car.
The accident is still being investigated by the Readington Township Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office.
