Suspicious person arrested for aggravated assault

October 21, 2019 at 1425 hours: Readington Township Police officers were dispatched to a residence on Oldwick Road after a suspicious male was seen by a resident kneeling in their driveway. The male, later identified as Richard Destefano (age 44 from Manville NJ), then began to scream profanities and charge at the resident. Destefano damaged a mirror on the residents vehicle as they were leaving the area. Destefano walked to the intersection of Central Avenue and Oldwick Road, then began to disrobe. Officers arrived on scene and located Destefano who was still screaming profanities. Destefano was combative and aggressive; he struck an officer in the face and continued to fight while being placed under arrest and during administrative processing. Destefano was charged with the following crimes: aggravated assault (on a police officer), resisting arrest, terroristic threats, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, defiant trespass, and criminal mischief. Destefano was transported to an area hospital for treatment, and custody was transferred to the Hunterdon County Sheriff's Department. Investigation done and arrest made by Patrolman Jason Phares.

The filing of criminal charges is merely one step in the process. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
